A few days ago, I attended the Everyday Wonder Women Series, where I was privileged to be one of the panelists. This event targets women where a topic touching on areas that affect women in their daily lives is discussed with a focus on personal and expert experiences.
The discussion at this particular event was on Burnout, I came to a disturbing realization that people do not talk about burnout to their family, friends or peers because it is seen as an embarrassment, that one is weak or cannot handle pressure.
Women business owners put tremendous pressure on themselves to make their businesses work in-order to be successful, make money, societal and pressure and also for their own satisfaction. On the other hand those that are employed work equally hard for the same reasons and more so to climb the corporate ladder at the workplace. At this recent talk, it was an absolute confirmation from the room that Burn-Out occurs to most women both employed and business owners.
The high expectations women put on themselves often lead to negative thoughts about themselves and situations they are in, when they do not meet these expectations. The high expectation can lead to mental, emotional and physical burnout.
When you experience burn out, it makes it difficult for you to do even the simplest of things. The delicate part about burn-out is one may not know they have burn out until they get over it. Practice mindfulness to gain awareness of what is going on inside of you to avoid getting to an absolute halt due to burn-out.
This article will help you to recognize if you are experiencing burn out. If you can bring to awareness when you experience burn out, you can begin to take positive action. This signs will help you know when you are experiencing burn out.
1. Are you overly exhausted?
When you need 5 or more cups of coffee to keep awake and alert during the day at work, it is a sign that you are not taking care of yourself properly.
To get to the bottom of this ask yourself; are you getting enough sleep, are you eating regularly and getting the right nutrients?, when was the last time you exercised?, Have you had enough water?
Take note here, that the simplest things have the biggest impact on our energy levels.
2. Is your self-talk negative?
Stress coupled with societal and self-pressure can play some powerful mind tricks on us. If you find yourself thinking on the negative and being so hard on yourself, you have not given yourself time to rest.
Give yourself Grace and manage your own expectations

3. Do you keep snapping at others?
Are you finding people around you annoying, including friends, family, colleagues? Or are you finding yourself more irritable than usual. You could be taking things out on other people. This does not result on anything worthwhile, take responsibility for your time and energy by making sure you are not over-committing yourself by taking on things that will drain you.
4. Does your to do list feel overwhelming
When you cram too much in a day, you may overwork yourself and feel guilty when you do not get it all done.
Try and stick to your three (3) top priorities and focus on these to get your best output.
5. Are you struggling to find motivation
Do you wake up and snooze your alarm, snooze it again until you have to rush through the door? Are you clear on what you need to get done but you have no motivation to do it?
When you are struggling to get motivation to get things done, it is important to identify what’s out of alignment in your life. Spend some time thinking about your vision for the future to get clarity and alignment for your tasks.
6. Do you wake up with a headache that doesn’t seem to go away?
Do you have days on end where you have this headache which doesn’t go away even after taking paracetamol? Or no matter how much water or coffee you are taking in?
Take some time to do some deep breathes, take a walk outside and stretch out your body, it will help relieve your headache. Try it!
7. Do you have time to practice self-care?
A big one here is Self-re, it plays a huge role in dealing with burn-out.
The tricky part is making some time for self-care. If you don’t have time for self-care, check in with yourself. Are you prioritizing everyone else’s needs above your own?
Give yourself permission to rest, schedule as little as 10 minutes every day for self-care.
